Botanical Shock and the California Experience

On Thursday, August 11th, we went to Humboldt Redwood State Park to gawk in awe inspired, drooling wonder at the Redwoods. Yes, seriously. While Dave and I were planning the itinerary for this trip, I kept saying that the photos for this region were photo-shopped. I’m still saying that! Even though we’re standing in the forest with all of these picturesque giants and these beautiful understory plants that seem to have been strategically placed… and I can touch them… photo-shopped!
Michelle Forys (Environmental Scientist: North Coast Redwoods District) and Jeff Barrett (Botanist with CA State Parks) were our generous tour guides. Since we were limited to 7 hours before we needed to get back on the road, it was immensely helpful to have them take us to various areas of interest. Their hospitality and willingness to share the exciting places, plants, and knowledge of the park made our time there amazing.

Of the cool things that happened today: (sorry for the photo overload without many captions; working on this post at close to 1am and they're starting to kick me out of the lobby.)

While we were in the forest, we started to smell/see smoke
A nearby area was burning
Luckily we made it past before the highway was closed. A 2 acre fire soon turned into 25 acres
